Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

The successful Shah Rukh Khan (SRK)-Aditya Chopra duo today unveiled their latest flick - “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”. The movie starts with an average looking, typical middle class desi SRK attending the wedding of his professor’s daughter. Similar to thousands of Bollywood films, he falls in love with the bride at first sight. God must have been really listening to his prayers, so that in next few seconds, the groom dies in an accident. This chivalrous employee of Punjab Power comes to the rescue of the girl and her family by marrying her. After watching this scene, many heart- broken admirers will start showing up at their beloved ones’ wedding in anticipation of a favorable miracle.

Soon, the beginning of their bland, ghisa pita zindagi unfolds - the husband is too nice, the wife is very sweet. However, there is no romantic relationship between them. It is funny that in spite of having a fairly decent dining room, the husband lets the wife sleep in the bedroom while he sleeps in a filthy barsati. It never occurred to this extremely “achha insaan” to sleep in the dining room. Anyways, don’t want to be too critical, after all this is a mainstream bollywood flick. It’s worth mentioning that hubby SRK’s makeup is apt and his performance is as usual superb. However, it is amazing to see a shy, and humble guy, who developed round shoulders while bearing the brunt of day-to-day chores suddenly jumps up and down and dances so energetically with the song “Haule Haule”. It is like watching SRK in “Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman”. Really, true love has the amazing power of turning an ordinary person into filmy SRK.

So, we know the look of SRK in “Haule Haule”. So, who is he in the song “Right leg age age?” Well, the “Haule Haule” husband disguises himself as his wife’s dance partner for some competition. SRK looks great as the new “Raj”. However, it is painful to watch him in close shots. He needs to do something to his face. His face looks emaciated!

Similar to Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s movie “Golmaal” where Amol Palekar shaved off his moustache but had to put it back at times for a whimsical boss. Here, King Khan shuttles between two different looks to make his wife happy. Many things happen in between, but at the end, the wife falls in love with the husband. So the story ends in what we have seen for decades. But the twist is that the husband disguises himself into a man he thinks his wife will like.

The film is great. Superb production, the usual Yash Raj Films touch minus Switzerland. This movie is contented with Amritsar. What a relief to see Indian location throughout the film. Oh! I forgot, there are some still photos from Japan though. That’s one of the best parts of the movie. So, don’t leave your seats as soon as the story ends. Anushka Sharma is beautiful and refreshing – a pure enjoyment watching her. Overall, a feel-good movie, won’t realize three hours have passed.
